StrangerLine FAQ
Short answers to what people ask before their first chat.
Getting started
How do I talk to strangers on StrangerLine?
Pick video, voice or text, tap start, and you're connected with someone who's online right now. Talk as long as you both want, or tap Next for someone else.
Do I need to sign up?
No sign-up form. An account is created for you when you enter, so you can start chatting right away and fill in your profile later if you feel like it.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser on iPhone, Android, tablets and desktop. Nothing to download.
Can I choose who I talk to?
Matching is random, but you can set country, language and gender preferences for free before you start. They narrow the pool; they don't guarantee a match, because it depends on who's online right now.
Where is StrangerLine available?
Everywhere. People join from all over the world. Set a country preference if you'd rather talk to someone nearby, or leave it open and see who shows up.
Is StrangerLine a dating app?
No. It's for talking to strangers one on one, about anything. No profiles to browse, no swiping, no matching by looks.
Cost
Is StrangerLine free?
It's free to start. Some features cost money later; the app shows you the price before anything is charged.
What happens when the free part runs out?
The app tells you, shows the price, and lets you decide. Nothing is charged without your OK.
Is there a time limit on a chat?
No timer. You start with a number of free chats, and each one lasts as long as you both want. When they're used up, you see the options before anything is charged.
Video, voice and text
Can I chat without a camera?
Yes. Voice chat uses only your mic. Text chat uses neither camera nor mic.
When does the browser ask for camera or mic access?
Only after you tap start, and only for the mode you picked: video asks for both, voice asks for the mic, text asks for neither. You can take access back any time in your browser settings.
Can I switch from text to voice or video?
Yes. If you both want more than text, move the same chat to a voice or video call from inside the chat.
Can I send photos or voice messages in a text chat?
Yes. Photos and voice messages work alongside typed messages.
What does the other person see about me?
Your nickname, avatar and country from your profile. Beyond that, only what you choose to show or type.
Can I send messages after a call?
Yes. Liked the conversation? Send a message afterwards and pick up where you left off. Messages can be auto-translated if you don't share a language.
My camera or mic isn't working. What do I do?
Check that your browser has permission for this site (the lock icon next to the address), close other apps that might be using the camera or mic, reload the page and tap start again.
Safety
How do I report someone?
Use the report button inside the chat. The match ends, you won't be connected with that person again, and we review the report against the community guidelines.
Are chats recorded?
No. We don't record video, voice or text chats.
Is StrangerLine for adults only?
Yes. 18 and over.
What if the other person is rude or inappropriate?
Tap Next to leave right away, then report them. We review it, and you won't be matched with that person again.
Is StrangerLine affiliated with other chat sites?
No. StrangerLine at strangerline.live is an independent service, not connected to any other chat site or app.
