Stay Safe on StrangerLine
Talking to strangers should feel easy, not risky. Here's what we handle, what your browser controls, and what stays in your hands.
What to know before your first chat
Four things that hold every time you tap start.
What others can see
Your nickname, avatar and country, plus whatever you choose to show or type: your camera in video chat, your voice in voice chat, your messages in text chat. Chats aren't recorded, and there's no public profile to browse.
Camera and mic
Your browser asks for permission after you tap start, and only for the mode you picked. Text chat asks for neither. You can take access back any time in your browser settings.
Report and block
Every chat has a report button. Reporting ends the match, and you won't be connected with that person again. Reports are reviewed; rule breakers get banned.
18+ only
StrangerLine is for adults. Minors aren't allowed.
How to report someone
A few seconds, and you're free to chat with someone else right after.
- 1
Open the report option
It's inside the chat screen, during and right after a conversation.
- 2
Pick a reason
Choose what happened. One tap is enough; you don't have to write anything.
- 3
Move on
The match ends and you can start a new chat right away. We take it from there.
- 4
What happens next
We review the report against the community guidelines. Accounts that break the rules get restricted or banned.
Tips for chatting with strangers
- Keep your full name, phone number, address, school and workplace to yourself.
- Never send money, gift cards or account details to someone you met in a chat.
- Don't open links or download files a stranger sends you.
- If a conversation makes you uncomfortable, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
- Report anything that breaks the rules. It helps the next person too.
